Treatment

If you have been diagnosed with fibroid tumors, it is important to discuss all of the available treatments for uterine fibroids and their symptoms with your primary caregiver, or OB/Gyn. Before deciding on a treatment it is a good idea to be well informed and know some common questions for your OB/Gyn. Depending on the types of fibroids you have and the symptoms that are associated with them, there are both surgical and non-surgical procedures available. Some non-surgical procedures include careful watching and waiting for non-symptomatic fibroids; or for fibroids that cause symptoms, there is uterine fibroid embolization. For other treatment options please review our Fibroid Treatment Options page.

Uterine fibroid embolization, also known as uterine artery embolization (UAE), is a procedure in which an interventional radiologist -- a medical doctor specializing in diagnostic radiology -- uses a catheter to deliver Embosphere® Microspheres that block the blood supply to the fibroids.

This is a minimally-invasive outpatient therapy that is done through a tiny nick in the skin, usually in the groin area, that treats all fibroid tumors. This fibroid treatment usually takes less than one hour. Some tests may need to be done prior to the treatment and some patients may need to stay in the hospital up to 23 hours. Clinical data suggests that patients who have uterine fibroid embolization and are treated with Embosphere Microspheres return to work and daily activities on average within 11 days.
